Trigger Actions and Update Contact Fields Based on Rule Algorithms

Martin Cogburn

Tip: Algorithms in Fields + Rules

About This Tip

You can create Rules in ONTRAPORT that update or are triggered by numerical values of your numeric contact Fields. Furthermore, by plugging mathematical algorithms and Merge Fields into the Field Values of your Rules, you’re able to create Rules that do the following:

  • Update the numerical value of a contact Field (Rule action)

  • Perform an action triggered by the numeric value of a contact Field in relation to any number (Rule trigger and condition)

  • Perform an action triggered by the numeric value of a contact Field in relation to the numeric value of another field (Rule trigger and condition)

  • Use the numerical value of a contact Field in relation to any number as a Rule condition

  • Use the numerical value of a contact Field and it’s relation to the numerical value of one or more numeric contact Fields as a Rule condition

How To Do This

  1. Create a custom numeric Field in the ONTRAPORT Field Editor

  2. Create a Rule incorporating that numeric Field into your Rule’s Trigger and Condition or your Rule’s Outcome (or both).

    1. Add a Trigger, Rule, or Condition that includes the field value of one of your numeric Fields

    2. Insert the Merge Field for the numeric Field you’re using in your Rule into the Field value

    3. Insert an algorithm of your choice (see below for valid equations)

  3. Test your Rule

Examples of Valid Algorithms in Rules

  • [YOUR FIELD]+1

  • [YOUR FIELD]*4

  • 8/[YOUR FIELD]

  • [FIELD A]*[FIELD B]

  • [FIELD A]*[FIELD B]/([FIELD C]+5)

Use Case: Update the numerical value of a contact Field based on Product Purchase (Rule action)

Use Case: Add a Tag to a contact based on the numerical value of a contact Field (Rule trigger and condition)

ONTRAPORT now includes several past and future dates to test against in Conditions, Campaigns, Groups, Rules, etc.:

No plans on Date values? See example below:
Rule: If field: [Latest Activity] is greater than or equal to date [set to current date] and + 6 months then add contact to tag: Active List

Where:

[Bracketed] text here is a merge field

Underlined text here is a selection from a drop down menu

Bolded text is an entry on a text field.
