Official comment
SMS allows for 160 characters. If your message exceeds the allotted 160 characters it is split. It can split up to ten times, for up to 1,600 characters.
You have to be careful when using merge fields in SMS messages, as they can be longer than anticipated ... a person's name or web address might be unusually long.
Most carriers will deliver the SMS in order, but not all do. We have noted that some carriers will reverse the order and deliver the last portion of the SMS first.
