Option on import to subscribe role-based email addresses

David Kellam

Hi team,

You're making an assumption about the use of "role-based" email addresses e.g. info@, sales@ etc. that isn't always true. And the smaller the company, the less likely it is to be true. e.g. Coaches using info@domain.com.

This also results in silent failure - there's nothing in the logs indicating this has happened (unlike if they opt out vs a link).

Please:

a) Make this show up in the automation log

b) Provide an option to override this on import

c) Make the full list of role addresses transparent

d) Consider reversing this

Also, how does this work for integrations?

Thanks for your feature request, David!

There is a short list of role based email addresses in RFC 2142, but you're right; since 1997 that list has been expanded quite a bit by corporate usage to include many other departments. Ontraport isn't alone in blocking them from CSV import; most ESPs have a similar policy including MailChimp, Active Campaign and Infusionsoft.

But we'll take another look at this. Certainly your points A - C above make sense even if we don't allow import of role based addresses.

EDIT: Here is the list of role based addresses we are setting to "Transactional Only" if imported via a CSV file:

Support are incredibly myopic in refusing to extrapolate (a full list of) what a role-based email address is too, beyond providing a limited subset of examples. And "role-based" and "role address" show zero support articles.

I need to know the full list so I can build an automation around noticing when this happens - essentially the equivalent set of "has been marked as transactional only without an unsubscribe link having been clicked". Using email address contains against the full list seems to be the only way to do this.

In my experience (including 20+ years running email servers), it's incredibly common for individuals to use info@, sales@ and admin@ as their personal email address in solo or small companies.

You're making assumptions that are really not true.

I can work around this, but this type of "silent failure" is going to trip people up for sure.

To answer your other questions: people can sign up using an opt-in form using a role based address. They come through as single opt-in.

You can also add role-based email addresses via the API, so your integrations that accept them can populate Ontraport and they will be set as single opt-in.

The limitation is only on importing role based email addresses via a CSV.
