Use many-to-many relationships for group segmentation and automation condition logic

Feature request: Use many-to-many relationships in filters, groups and automation logic

I would love the ability to search, create groups and apply automation conditions based on the presence or absence of a many-to-many relationship between two records.

Currently, the creation of a relationship can act as an automation trigger, but the relationship itself cannot then be used as a filter or condition within the automation. This makes it difficult to build even relatively simple communication workflows based on which relationships exist—and equally importantly, which do not.

For example, it would be extremely useful to create conditions such as:

• Has a relationship with a particular record

• Does not have a relationship with a particular record

• Has any relationship through a specified many-to-many field

• Has no relationships through that field

This would allow automations to identify the correct records and send the right communication based directly on their relationships, without requiring additional fields or complicated workarounds.

The same functionality would also make many-to-many relationships much easier to audit. At present, we often have to open individual records one by one to see which relationships exist. This is extremely time-consuming and makes it difficult to identify relationships that were created successfully, relationships that are missing, or where a process may have failed.

If relationships could be used as search and group criteria, we could immediately create views showing:

• All records related to a specific record

• All records that should be related but currently are not

• Records with at least one relationship through a particular field

• Records with no relationships through that field

Many-to-many relationships are already powerful enough to trigger an action when they are created. Allowing their ongoing presence or absence to be used in searches, groups and automation conditions would make that functionality considerably more useful, transparent and complete.
